A Winning Proposition

Francesca Webster from Superyacht Times finds out why the Amels 60 is shaping the way for fast delivery and charter allure.

As Damen Yachting continues to refine its superyacht offerings, the Amels 60 emerges as a standout in the market, not only for its striking aesthetic and technical refinement, but for its distinctive appeal in the charter sector and its well-calibrated commercial positioning. Speaking with Jorrit Pilaar, Commercial Executive EMEA at Damen Yachting, it's clear that the Amels 60 has struck a compelling balance between performance, privacy, and fast-track ownership.

A Platform for Charter

At the core of the Amels 60’s charter popularity lies a layout that blends luxury and livability. With six guest staterooms – including a VIP and owner’s suite on the main deck, and four staterooms below with direct access to the beach club and swim platform – the configuration provides not only privacy but also seamless indoor–outdoor transitions that are prized by charter guests. Pilaar emphasises that this accessibility, especially to wellness areas, has resonated strongly: “We’ve seen a fantastic response to the wellness facilities on the lower deck, particularly when combined with the direct access to the staterooms and feedback from brokers is that the area is a major bonus for charter clients as well.”

The expansive sun deck also plays a central role in the yacht’s charter prowess. Described as both private and versatile, it offers space for a Jacuzzi that can function like a pool, a bar setup for entertaining, and glass windbreaks that provide shelter while preserving panoramic views. The helipad adds to the sense of autonomy and ease of movement. “You can host a party there, or just enjoy complete privacy. It's certainly an area that appeals to the next generation of yacht owners, who are attracted by the offering of the private sun deck, combined with the open plan lower deck”, Pilaar notes.

Of the Amels 60s delivered so far, three are already operating successfully on the charter market, but even buyers who opt for private use benefit from the yacht’s proven charter reputation, which may have an effect on resale potential. This is a key factor in an industry where flexibility and asset performance matter.

Speculative Builds and Swift Delivery

One of the Amels 60’s most attractive commercial propositions is its availability. As Pilaar outlines, the next hull featuring interiors by Harrison Eidsgaard, is scheduled for launch this autumn. With fairing and painting underway and sea trials planned for late summer, prospective owners could be cruising the Caribbean by Christmas. “We’ve already acquired the tenders,” he adds, referencing the purchase of a tender and a crew boat, ensuring a turnkey experience. “It’s really like a turnkey project. You can step onboard and sail away.”

This speculative build strategy has become a cornerstone of the brand’s commercial agility. Future units, including one with a Winch Design interior, the next with a Laura Sessa interior, are scheduled for spring and potentially autumn of the following year. This fast-track model allows clients to bypass the often years-long new-build timeline while still offering a degree of customisation if decisions are made early enough in the process. “Even if you acquire the yacht at a later stage, you can still change loose furniture and amend the aesthetic without delaying delivery,” says Pilaar.

Contemporary Styling for the Next Generation

From an aesthetic standpoint, the Amels 60 has consistently appealed to a younger generation of yacht buyers. “We get compliments all the time,” Pilaar states, citing the success of both Harrison Eidsgaard and Winch Design interiors in capturing the modern yachting lifestyle. The next available yacht features a New York loft-style interior – a sharper, more urban contrast to the beachy tones of earlier builds – while still retaining the brand’s hallmark of understated elegance.

It has long been Damen Yachting’s policy to work with top industry designers and to create interior concepts that appeal to a broad spectrum of potential owners. The Winch interior draws on inspiration from the Pacific Islands, the design team has employed soft sand tones with oceanic blues, with every deck evoking a sensory journey through nature. This layered approach to design captures a spirit of exploration while offering a refined, contemporary ambience tailored to modern yacht owners.

Starting with a natural and neutral foundation, the team introduced bespoke features such as an internally illuminated staircase sculpture that changes colour to suit the mood. Whether designed as a serene family retreat or an expressive, art-driven space, the yacht reflects Damen Yachting’s commitment to crafting highly individual yachts that celebrate creativity, lifestyle and connection to the sea.

The subsequent hull’s interior has been designed by Laura Sessa who has created a contemporary interior aesthetic with a refined foundation of black and white, which can be effortlessly adapted to suit each owner's vision. Her clever use of space and detail further enhances the onboard experience for both owners and crew. With a design approach that embraces organic forms and evolving tastes, Sessa’s interiors on board the Amels 6010 are defined by their flexibility and flow.

With its blend of charter readiness, owner appeal, and near-term delivery slots, the Amels 60 sits at a strategic crossroads in the market. It offers a turnkey opportunity for discerning clients – whether for personal enjoyment or as a stepping stone to a larger custom build. Damen Yachting’s ongoing refinements to both design and delivery strategy underline its commitment to maintaining a leading edge in the 60-metre segment, with the Amels 60 series standing as a testament to that vision.
