In Dialolgue with Captain Olly Lewis

Currently finalising a successful winter charter season in the Caribbean, the Amels 180 PAPA is getting ready to head back across the Atlantic Ocean for her Mediterranean summer 2023. Repeat Amels fleet Captain Olly Lewis brings us up to speed about why he again would cross the ocean in a heartbeat on board of PAPA.

Olly joined PAPA at the beginning of 2022 in Thailand, after she already cruised extensively in Asia. His first task was to relocate the yacht from Thailand back to the Amels shipyard in Vlissingen for some refit and warranty works ahead of her busy Mediterranean charter season. It was a passage of 8,500 nautical miles, taking up to 42 days with some unseasonably rough weather for the majority of the crossing.

Rock solid

“These Amels yachts have exceptional seakeeping capabilities. During the trip we encountered some pretty serious head seas, some substantial beam seas and some rather large following seas, so we had everything thrown at us. But not one of those sea conditions stopped us making forward progress. In true Amels form, the boat was rock solid. If anything, the crew were giving up before the boat. That is normally what happens. She delivered us safely to Holland, without issue. Yes, we reduced some speed and we altered course accordingly, but she took everything that was thrown at her and we still slept in relative comfort knowing we were on a rock solid ship.”

Global cruiser

PAPA is a 2019 Amels 180 with a 5-cabin configuration, sleeping a total of 10 guests, and able to cruise with 12 guests. Hull number 23 of the Amels successful series, she offers a hugely successful charter platform, is a proven global cruiser and has that typical Northern European/Dutch pedigree of a really truly excellent built. With 13 crew, a steel displacement hull and global capability PAPA is able to go anywhere in the world.
