A Proven Build Philosophy, Refined Over Time

The Palm Beach International Boat Show, held from 25 to 29 March, marked our first international yacht show of the season. For Damen Yachting, it offered more than a stage to present its portfolio. It created the context to share the thinking behind it. Along the dock, the 74-metre Amels 242 CASINO ROYALE stood as a clear point of reference. Not only as a yacht on display, but as the embodiment of an approach that continues to evolve across Amels Limited Editions, Xplorer and Yacht Support. A build philosophy shaped over time and deliberately designed with the future in mind.

Thinking in Generations

During the show, Rose Damen, Managing Director at Damen Yachting explained how it is a mindset that defines how Damen Yachting approaches yacht building, where each delivery is not seen as an endpoint, but as part of a long-term commitment to continuity and improvement. Knowledge is gathered not only in design and engineering, but in operation, from Owners, Captains, crew and co-makers, and carried forward into future builds.

“Being family-owned means that we can think in terms of generations, rather than giving in to short-term compromises. When we deliver a yacht, it is not just the end of a project. That is where the input starts for the next one. Our yachts don’t just evolve, they compound in quality.”

Proven Platforms,

Defined by Experience

At the core of this philosophy lies the Amels Limited Editions concept. Developed and refined over decades, it is based on a powerful principle: build on proven technical platforms and strengthen them with every delivery. By developing, engineering and optimising these platforms in advance, complexity is reduced early in the process. This enables clearer decision-making, greater predictability in delivery and a level of technical maturity that continues to build over time.

For Commercial Executive USA Jan van Hogerwou, proven platforms provide clarity from the outset, with many of the more complex technical decisions already resolved. This approach resonates strongly in a market where both experienced buyers and first-time Owners are looking for certainty at a higher level.

“At Damen Yachting, we are building on proven platforms. Many of the more complex technical decisions have already been made. We see highly experienced buyers who value that reassurance, as well as first-time Owners who take confidence from the fact that these decisions are already in place. At the same time, if you walk through our yachts, none of them are the same. The platform provides a strong foundation, while still allowing freedom within that.”

This balance between certainty and flexibility defines the experience from the outset, offering a clear starting point while allowing Owners to shape the yacht around their own vision.

Performance Where It Matters Most

The strength of a proven platform is ultimately measured in operation. Captain Jonathan Kielty, who spent eight years aboard Amels 171 LIND (ex BEL ABRI, BELLE AIMEE, APRIL) and later returned to Vlissingen for a major refit, reflected on how she performed when pushed beyond standard operating conditions. He recalled a passage from the Maldives to Japan, requiring a transit through the South China Sea against prevailing weather systems. Even within the best available window, the yacht encountered sustained head seas of around four metres.

“We waited for that window and went straight into it, running for 24 hours in very heavy conditions. That’s when you really see what the yacht is made of. What stands out is the stability and the robustness, the yacht doesn’t flinch. The same applies in high-temperature regions like Southeast Asia, where everything is under pressure, but the yacht just keeps performing.”

Feedback as a Foundation for Progress

Beyond performance, Captain Jonathan Kielty emphasised the role of feedback in shaping future builds, not as a final step, but as a continuous part of the process. The refit of LIND, after years of operation across different Owners and cruising areas, provided a clear example, with key onboard spaces reassessed and refined based on daily use.

“You are not just turning up to build a yacht, you are included in every step of the process, and that continues long after delivery. When we came back to Vlissingen with LIND, we came back with a ten-year-old yacht. The galley, for example, was completely rethought based on how it was actually used. We left with something shaped by everything that had been learned since.”

Proven in Everyday Operation

On board Amels 242 CASINO ROYALE that same philosophy becomes tangible in day-to-day use. Not as a concept, but as a way of building that translates directly into reliability, clarity and ease of operation, as experienced by the crew on board.

“On CASINO ROYALE everything just works, day in, day out. The decks are logical, safe and easy to use. And the systems are reliable, so everything runs smoothly. That means the crew can fully focus on the guests, because in the end, it’s all about creating unforgettable memories.”

Introduction to Superyacht Ownership

During the Palm Beach International Boat Show, Amels partnered with BOAT International on the inaugural Introduction to Superyacht Ownership event. As part of the programme, Commercial Executive USA Jan van Hogerwou joined the panel Overseeing a New Build: Where to Start and How to Stay the Course, sharing insights into the value of experience, collaboration and a well-guided build process.
